What to expect
What actually happens?
Your scan data is reviewed by an interventional radiologist — a specialist trained through a recognised local fellowship or internationally. They examine your imaging with interventional procedures specifically in mind, and then discuss the findings and your options with you in a short telephonic consultation.
What's the difference between an interventional radiologist and a normal radiologist? Isn't the original report enough?
A diagnostic radiologist's report tells you what the scan shows. An interventional radiologist goes a step further — they're a specialist who actually performs image-guided procedures, so they read your scan through the lens of "what could be treated, and how." In that sense an interventional radiologist is closer to a surgeon: the review isn't just describing the images, it's assessing whether a minimally invasive procedure like cryoablation or chemoembolization is feasible for your particular case. That's a different question from the one a standard report answers.
Who will look at the scans?
Your scans are reviewed by the interventional radiologists at Cape Town Interventional Radiology (CTIR), who are Canada-trained. You can read more about the team on the CTIR interventional radiology team page.
Which scans can I submit?
Typically recent MRI, CT or PET imaging relevant to the area of concern. If you're unsure whether your scans are suitable, message us before paying and we'll advise.
How long does the review take?
The review usually takes about 3 to 5 business days, as we often need to gather multiple scans that require careful review. If your case is urgent, we can expedite it — let us know. The telephonic discussion of the findings afterwards is approximately 5–10 minutes.
Will I get a written report?
Yes. You will receive a written report of the interventional radiologist's review, alongside the telephonic discussion of your suitability and options.
Does this guarantee I can have the procedure?
No. The review is an expert assessment of whether an interventional procedure may be appropriate for you — not a guarantee of treatment. If you're a candidate, we'll explain the next steps; if you're not, the radiologist will explain why and what alternatives may exist.
Can I speak to the interventional radiologist directly?
Yes. Once payment is confirmed and your scans have been reviewed, you are entitled to a telephonic consultation to discuss the findings of the scan review and your options.
How do I pay?
Payment for the scan review is made via Yoco, directly to Cape Town Interventional Radiology, using the button above or the link we've sent you. This is because the scan review is a radiology service provided by the interventional radiology team, not a GP consultation. Your review is arranged once payment is received.
Do you accept medical aid?
The scan review is self-pay. A detailed invoice can be provided for you to submit to your medical aid yourself for possible reimbursement.
